Volunteer

The museum is committed to recruiting volunteers who represent the diverse communities we serve. We welcome you to apply for employment and/or internship and volunteer positions listed below.

Volunteers

The Museums of Sonoma County are looking for motivated and engaging individuals who are looking to interact with the public. The Museum provides the opportunity to meet interesting people in the community at our exhibition receptions, assist with the installation of exhibits, interact with artists and speakers at our lectures, assist kids with crafts at our family days and help sustain our vibrant and diverse artistic community through front desk and museum shop service. To inquire about all volunteer opportunities please contact Tiffany Feagin at tfeagin@museumsc.org or call 707 579-1500.

Front Desk: We are looking for enthusiastic and social individuals to enrich the experience of museum guests by providing information about exhibitions, programs, collections, and general policies. Front Desk volunteers greet guests, run the front desk and gift shop cash registers, and answer basic questions about the museum’s history and exhibits.  Front Desk volunteers also help with day to day tasks at the museum from answering phone calls to basic office work as needed.  Applicants should possess basic computer knowledge, be friendly and outgoing, enjoy talking to guests of diverse backgrounds, and be able to volunteer a minimum of six hours a month.

Docent: We are looking for energetic and confident individuals to act as docents for the Museums of Sonoma County.  Docents should be flexible, comfortable working with school age children, adults and other diverse groups.  A background in education is a big plus.  Docents are responsible for leading tours of the museum and its collections, speaking about the current exhibitions and the historic building. Docents work with the Associate Curator of Education to improve their touring skills, and engage in continuing education activities and programs at the museum.  All necessary training will be provided, but it is helpful if docents are comfortable reading and eventually implementing a short pre-planned lesson for some of the tour groups.

Exhibit Installation: Exhibit installers work with the Museum's curatorial staff on all aspects of gallery preparation. Must be willing to work long hours during short periods of time throughout the year and able to paint, lift 20-30 lbs, and follow instructions.

Office Work: We are looking for organized and creative individuals to help out in the museum office.  If you would enjoy spending a few hours in our office once a week, we could certainly use the help.  It’s a great chance to brush up on office skills including filing, using the copier, and basic computer skills (including the cash registers) This is a great way to help out your community, and improve your resume at the same time!

Gallery Attendant: The Museums of Sonoma County are looking for gallery attendants to assist with special exhibitions.  Gallery attendants are an important part of our guest’s experience.  Gallery attendants maintain a constant presence in the gallery, inform guests of gallery rules, and answer basic questions about the exhibit.  This is a fantastic opportunity to meet and talk with guests in a low-pressure, museum environment.
